Everything You Want to Know about the Royal Malaysian Police Museum

If you’ve enjoyed films like Pearl Harbor, The Enemy at the Gates, The Bodyguard and many other police and military movies with war and undercover themes, you’ll definitely be in your element at the Royal Malaysian Police Museum.

Built in 1961 to honor the heroes of Malaysia, the Royal Malaysian Police Museum houses military vehicles, aircrafts and exhibits numerous documents, relics and items from the past detailing crime prevention and investigation.

Located in Jalan Perdana, the Muzium Polis Diraja Malaysia was originally built on the grounds of Police Senior Officers’ Mess of Malaysia. After renovation and several outfitting, the place officially became a museum and was then formally inaugurated in 1999 by the Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi.

Being named after the royalty, the museum also has a huge collection of everything royal and the Malaysian police. The collections cover the periods of the Melaka Sultanate to the present day police generation.

It contains about 7, 595 artifacts of memorabilia from the past and houses on its yard the Malaysian Police Force’s first ever aircraft Cessna, a marine police boat, a Ferret car, car guns confiscated from communist terrorists and several other cars with historical significance.

The main museum is divided into 3 galleries. The first gallery displays police uniforms used all throughout history, gala and parade uniforms and the recognition, medals, plaques and gifts received by the unit from foreign entities. It is further subdivided into 2 galleries: Gallery A includes uniforms from the Malacca Malay Sultanate era, Dutch era and the British era; and the Gallery B which contains uniform during the Straits Settlement of the British colony. You’ll find that the police uniform used during these colonial periods were short pants.

In the second gallery, models and information on the vehicles used by the police department are also on exhibit. You will also find weaponry and all kinds of tools used in battles. There is a cabinet displaying weapons used by the terrorists that were confiscated by the police and home-made weapons used during emergency situations. Some of the weapons include knives, spears, pistols, rifles, swords and cannons.

The third gallery exhibits information about the war: the Japanese occupation of the country in World War II, the rise in conflict between Indonesia and Malaysia, and many others.

Every quarter, an exhibit featuring a special theme is also organized in the museum. You’ll be allowed to use touch-screen computers to learn more about the exhibit and interactive programs are used to encourage virtual exploration of the Malaysian police history.

So whether you’re an action film enthusiast or a military buff, you’ll find the visit to the Royal Malaysian Police Museum extremely interesting. TOURIST INFORMATION

The Royal Malaysian Police Museum is open Tuesdays to Sundays and public holidays from 10:00 A.M. to 6:00 P.M. An admission fee is required to enter the premises.
