The Best Ways of Getting to Kuala Lumpur

Now a thriving metropolis from a sleepy tin-mining village, Kuala Lumpur, which literally means “mud estuary” in Malay, has come a long way from its humble beginnings. By European standards, Kuala Lumpur or simply KL is still a small city compared to other developed cities of big countries. Still, there are lots to see in the country, and getting to Kuala Lumpur is easy.

Getting to Kuala Lumpur by air is of course the most popular way, but there are many options that will suit all kinds of travelers. It is possible to travel by trains and buses if you’re coming from neighboring countries such as Singapore and Thailand. Unfortunately, when coming from other destinations, you can only fly to Kuala Lumpur.

The national carrier, Malaysia Air System, flies internationally to and from major cities around the world. The Malaysia Air System is also the largest domestic carrier in Malaysia.

The Air Asia also flies internationally from other parts of Asia to Malaysia. With its low airfare costs, Air Asia is a favorite choice for flying to Kota Kinabalu, Langkawi and Penang, and to other Asian countries like Thailand, Indonesia and Cambodia.

There are two airports in Malaysia: the KLIA or the Kuala Lumpur International Airport and the LCCT or the Low Cost Carrier Terminal. The LCCT is an airport terminal serving Air Asia and other low-cost carriers. Both the LCCT and the KLIA are located in the same complex, but there is no direct pathway between them. The Airport complex is located about 45 kilometers South of Kuala Lumpur’s city center and public transportation systems like taxis, buses, and the KLIA Express servicing the airport as well as the KL Sentral Station are all available.

BY LAND

Getting to Kuala Lumpur by land is possible through a major motorway in Malaysia. The capital city of Kuala Lumpur is located right in the middle of the North-South Expressway, which leads to the Malaysia-Thailand border in the North and the land bridge to Singapore in the South. If you’re already in Singapore or in Thailand, Kuala Lumpur is just a drive away. You can either get a rental or you could also try riding a train or a bus.

By Train. From Singapore and Thailand, Kuala Lumpur can be reached by Malaysia’s Railway System, Malaysian Rail, which travels from end to end of the whole country. The KL Sentral Railway Station, the main train station is just a few minutes away from South of downtown.
By Bus. It is easy to get to Kuala Lumpur from Singapore by bus. Long distance journeys are served by many bus terminals and there are express service buses running between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. Some of Kuala Lumpur’s bus stations include the Bersepadu Selatan, Hentian Puduraya, Hentian Putra, Hentian Duta and Kuala Lumpur Old Railway Station.

BY BOAT

Because it is not situated by the sea, getting to Kuala Lumpur by boat is not a practical option, although it is possible. There are ferries serving Malaysia from a port in Sumatra, Indonesia to the Port Klang located approximately 40 kilometers West of Kuala Lumpur.
